
About Akron
Akron, population 1,757, is located 110 miles northeast of Denver on US Highway 34. At an elevation of 4,662 feet, Akron is the highest point between Denver and Chicago along the BNSF Railway.
Akron is the county seat of Washington County, a county known for its production of hard red winter wheat, cattle and oil and gas.
Akron is home to the Colorado Plains Regional Airport. This airport is home to the largest runway on the eastern plains of Colorado, and houses fueling facilities as well as several aviation-related businesses which are used by both military and civilian aircraft nationwide.
A small, but thriving retail sector calls Akron home. From hardware to groceries, from floral and gifts to a locally-owned pharmacy, Akron has what you need. Wonderful full-service restaurants draw patrons from a large area of northeast Colorado, and a cozy coffee shop offers diners a nice place to unwind and enjoy a beverage and a snack. Akron boasts two service stations with attached convenience stores, and one with a full-service tire shop. Automotive and agricultural equipment parts and repairs are provided at yet other Akron businesses. One of the largest employers in the area is Global Harvest Foods, a producer that uses local grain to produce bird feed globally.
The Akron Clinic has physicians and other service providers providing both immediate and rehabilitation medical needs. Four full-service hospitals are located within 35 miles of Akron, and a well-staffed ambulance service is located in Akron if the need arises for that.
Services that are not found in Akron can be found an easy 35-minute drive away in the larger communities of Sterling and Fort Morgan.
Akron’s PK-12 school is recognized for both academic and athletic excellence. A large fieldhouse hosts athletic events for leagues from all across northeast Colorado, as its size and capabilities allow for a spacious place to host large events. Attractive and well-appointed baseball, softball and football fields are also enjoyed by both school and community athletic programs.
Recreational opportunities include the Akron fishing pond, surrounded by a disc golf course; the Washington County Golf Club, three city parks, a seasonal swimming pool, and rodeo grounds located at the Washington County Fairgrounds. A large event center is also located on the fairgrounds, which is busy every week with social and business activities. The Washington County Museum is located in several buildings around town, and is open Sunday afternoons throughout the summer.
Nine churches serve congregations in Akron, and often work together to provide programs such as Vacation Bible School and special church services throughout the year.
Akron still displays many of the values of a rural community that have been lost elsewhere – neighbors helping neighbors and a reliance on one another in both good times and bad. It is a good place to raise a family and a good place to settle when your soul is looking for a more relaxed lifestyle.
